Finding the best job so get at a ski resort is largely reliant on why you want to work there. Assuming that you don’t want to launch a career, then you are probably looking to take advantage of the atmosphere, the discounts on ski equipment, and of course the slopes themselves. If you haven’t taken much time to look into the jobs available ski resorts, then you may not have a good idea as to what type of jobs you really want. Here is a quick look at a few of the best jobs to get at a ski resort based upon the benefit that you most desire.

Best Jobs to Get at a Ski Resort For Maximum Flexibility
If your number one priority is finding a job that gives you maximum flexibility in terms of schedule then joining the indoor staff, especially in the food and beverage department will likely be your best bet. Servers, bartenders, and other front of the house staff tend to have schedules which change on a weekly basis. Plus, in this industry it is not uncommon for employees to regularly switch shifts with each other in order to get free time when they want it. In terms of overall flexibility, nothing competes with this type of indoor staff position.

Best Jobs to Get at a Ski Resort to Get Maximum Powder Time
If you are looking into getting a job at a ski resort simply because you want to spend as much time on the slopes as possible then there are two options to consider. The first is becoming a ski instructor. In most cases, you only need and intermediate level of skiing ability to be considered for this type of opening. While you will spend a lot of time on the slopes, you also need to keep in mind that you will likely be spending a lot of time teaching younger children as well. This means that some level of patience and customer interaction will be necessary. The other option is to be part of the ski patrol. This will not only give you a chance to be on the slopes, but also give you access to areas that the general public will not get to see. The one thing to keep in mind is that this job can be dangerous and some resorts only offer this as a volunteer position.

Least Stressful Job at a Ski Resort

It is difficult to find a job at a ski resort that is completely stress free, however most people would agree that working as a retail ski shop employee will normally be towards the top of the list. It gives you a chance to talk here with other people who are just as passionate about skiing as you are. At the same time, every retail job will have its stressful moments. Additionally, the introductory wages are normally not very high, however you will get to take advantage of discounts in the shop as well as on the slopes.

Look for ski jobs now.

Anyone who loves the outdoors would likely thrive with a number of different mountain jobs. If you have a knack for the outdoors, then you may wish to consider a mountain job yourself.

Mountain jobs that can combine the outside with a paycheck can vary depending on the time of year it is so your skills should also be able to vary a bit. Chances are though, if you are willing to work, you can find a great paying mountain job that will keep you outside the majority of the time.

Here are a few outdoor mountain jobs to consider:

• Guide: You can become a guide for a number of outdoor activities that people enjoy when they take a mountain vacation. Fishing guide, hiking guide, rafting guide, ski guide, you name it. If it is outdoors, there is likely an opportunity for you to find employment as a guide.
• Wildlife Management: Working in wildlife management will keep you outside and can be rewarding in both money and pride. When you work in wildlife management you deal with making sure that all the animals, and the people, on the mountain stay safe.
• Sales and Rentals: Another great outdoor mountain job can be found in sales and rentals. Many of the outside activities such as white water rafting and mountain biking require equipment to be purchased or rented. These types of rental shops are often set up outdoors in a specific location on the mountain giving you the chance for fresh air and an income.

No matter what you love to do outdoors, you are likely to be able to put that enjoyment to work with a great outdoor mountain job. While you may have to use your imagination, if you look hard enough, you are sure to find something that fits.

Perhaps the most sought after position on the mountain, ski school instructor, is not only the most popular (read: competitive) job but also the one with the highest longevity. From helping brand-new skiers and riders sort out their gear, ride lifts, apply sunscreen, and fall gracefully to encouraging more advanced skiers to push their limits to get to the next level, a ski instructor’s day is always different.

The best candidate for the instructor role is someone who is psyched to be out there (despite cold, wind, or poor snow conditions), who has infinite reserves of patience and who exudes energy and enthusiasm.

One of the specific perks to working in the ski school is many resorts will help either fully or partially sponsor you to take the PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) certification course. This is an excellent opportunity to become more honed in your skills as well as become an invaluable member of any ski school team. The additional training also means better placement for lessons (i.e. getting more advanced students or private lessons as opposed to only beginner programs), higher pay and a competitive edge against the newest applicants every season.

Another fantastic option for instructing in a volunteer capacity is to work with the adaptive ski schools. Most mountains have a variation of this and while it is predominantly volunteer-based, many resorts reward their volunteers with free lift tickets and passes.

“Are you going home for Christmas?” I asked my co-worker, fellow lift-operator Ryan.
“Nah, too expensive. Besides, I have to work Christmas Day,” he replied.

Thus began a series of similar conversations held between myself and most of my co-workers. Working at a ski resort, while having many perks, also required working all the holidays. After mulling over the impending, potentially lonely, few weeks, I came up with a tradition that still holds to this day: Orphan Christmas.

While it varies from year to year, most of the components are the same. The invites go out about a week before Christmas for our Orphan Christmas Eve Dinner. This usually works best for most mountain employees, as the next week will be the busiest of the year (excluding a few three-day weekends and Spring Break). After assigning easy (read: cheap) dishes to bring, my transplant friends congregate in our living room for an orphan feast and yuletide camaraderie. After dinner, our White Elephant gift exchange begins. The only requirement is it must be something you did NOT purchase. Used gear, handmade gifts, and “coupons” for different services (“I will walk your dog while you are in Utah skiing in March”) were the bounty.

Hosting our tradition has proven that simpler times are possible and the wealth of friends is the best gift of the year.

One of the first sensations to be perceived by most when venturing to the mountainous regions of the world would likely be the overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility that they bestow. The clean air, breathtaking views, and rejuvenating spirit of nature are just a few of the elements you’ll find here that all work in harmony to dispel negative forces that exist. The ground here will literally pull the bad “mojo” out of anything that walks on it, replacing it subtly instead with a vibrant, energizing spirit that you’ll not soon forget.

This spirit is manifested from divine energy within living things, both animate and inanimate. However, it can take some time to become attuned to this spirit. It literally pours off of trees like fountains of goodness, but is nearly invisible to those not open to its presence. You’ll surely notice this form of “Earth magick” as soon as you’re exposed to it, but through the anxieties of the world and the negative experiences of most of it’s inhabitants, mental blocks can prevent you from seeing the “big picture”.

“Flatland fever”
Most of the negativity of this world seems to be concentrated in cities, places that have long been without the healing touch of nature and its hosts. Without this energy prevalent in today’s society, humanity is on a downward spiral, and the outlook is grim. With a little foresight one can deduce that given the current “life equation” and all of its variables, without nature interwoven into the fabric of mainstream society, we will soon see consequences of its absence. Anger and hatred are running rampant in the densely populated areas of Earth, and we need a release.

The cure
Get back to nature, plain and simple. Although, depending on the level of negativity engrained in each individual, the rates of success will vary. However, the mountains contain the most potent and “untainted” healing energy, and your chances of success here are much greater than if you were to take a walk to your local park, where the energy is present, but on a much smaller and more abstract scale. There are simply too many nearby negative forces and distractions that prevent most from seeing the true shamanic qualities of nature. If you open and surrender yourself to these subtle Earth energies, you’ll not be disappointed, cheers.

As the snow begins to fall, there is a stir in the ice climbing community. The question on many minds is “Is __(insert climbing area)__ in yet?”

“In” is a term that is used when the flow of water (whether it be from snow melt or a naturally occurring source such as a stream or river) begins its freeze-thaw cycles that produce thick walls of ice. Flows can begin to form as early as late October and last through the spring. As a beginner ice climber, the season may not get fully underway until January when more ice is open and easier destinations are no longer as crowded.

To get set-up for your first season, the essential gear list isn’t as intimidating as you may think:
• Crampons
• Harness
• Sturdy boots (mountaineering, ski, or tele boots)
• WARM down belay coat
• ATC/belay device
• WARM gloves and hat
• Helmet

Most of these items many people already have for other outdoor activities, and anything you might need to buy, consider going to a used or consignment gear shop for your first few seasons. Ice tools are good to purchase if you find them cheap, but in your first season, you will most likely be climbing single pitches so you and your partner can use one pair with no troubles.

If you are interested in getting on some ice but don’t know of anyone to go with, www.mountainproject.com and www.abc-of-iceclimbing.com are great user-run online forums to find route information, gear, and potential partners. They will also have other resources for finding clinics around your area so you can learn the techniques to have a great first season!

When a lot of people break down camp from their hometowns to set up shop in the more glaciated states, a common first-time employer is their local ski mountain. With positions ranging from slinging coffee at the local café to public relations and marketing (for the bigger resorts), the skiing industry is not only an invariable moneymaker for state tourism, but also the lifeblood of many towns themselves.

My first job out of college found me shoveling snow and “bumping” chairs. I chose the mighty job of Lift Operator, as I couldn’t see myself enjoying the season stuck behind any ticket sales or lunchroom counter. From the moment I got my mountain issued snow pants and logoed parka, I was hooked. While the early morning car rides in sub-freezing temps took their toll during the early season, those cold memories were quickly replaced with better ones featuring cloudless days and first-tracks.

When recalling the “good old days”, what comes to mind most frequently is the feeling of community that working at a ski resort brought. During short intermittent phases that my car was operable, I made sure to repay the many co-workers who picked me up on the side of the road during those other, longer periods of time. When one of our co-workers got injured on the job, we brought him beer and pizza to take away the pain of being out of work for a few weeks. The mountain brought us closer together and showed us that we were beyond our titles and duties, a feeling and lesson well worth the wages.
