Why the Telluride Academy

Telluride Academy, based in the heart of the rugged San Juan Mountains, is one of the largest and most unique outdoor youth organizations in Colorado. Our Mission is to Inspire children and teens through experiential education that promotes physical activity, creative learning, environmental stewardship, responsibility to others and positive life choices. Each summer, Telluride Academy, a 40-year-old non-profit organization, welcomes over 900 students who participate in more than 100 diverse programs. Through exploration and play, we strive to inspire imaginations and instill an awareness and appreciation for the outdoors.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will be an empathetic and supportive leader, one who shares the Academy’s values and philosophies. They will have a respect and love of the outdoors shown through the development of a vigorous outdoor education curriculum that provides challenging experiences, collaborative and problem-based learning and leadership training that values the experience for each individual child. The Executive Director (ED) must possess a commitment to lead by example, maximizing the strong administrative team and continue to build an autonomous, thriving work environment that requires exceptional organizational proficiency. The ability to adapt and improvise as challenges are presented is essential.

Summary of Responsibilities

The ED of Telluride Academy is a high-level executive who directs the operations, programs, and activities of the organization. The role is one of leadership and inspiration, while fostering a clear vision for the future of the Academy. The ED facilitates the Academy’s mission, while honoring its culture and history and is the organization’s leading community advocate working closely with the staff and Board of Directors on all advancement initiatives.


  • Report to and collaborate with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in program decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization
  • Supervise, mentor, and collaborate with staff to ensure we’re meeting our mission, vision, and goals
  • Strategic planning and implementation with the support of the Board and staff
  • Collaborate with the Finance Director in the creation and oversight of the annual budget
  • Drive fundraising and other revenues to support the Academy’s mission and operational needs
  • Ensure the Academy’s visibility by serving as the spokesperson to the community, media and public
  • Establish partnerships with organizations that strategically enhance the Academy’s mission
  • Prepare and submit all grants, continually researching new sources and development opportunities
  • Oversee Board and committee meetings
  • Establish internal policies and procedures for daily management of Academy
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of directors to support the mission and vision of Academy


  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience;
  • A track record of effectively leading and scaling a performance and outcomes-based organization;
  • Proven track record of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Strong fundraising, marketing and public relations experience with a range of stakeholders;
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programming with data-driven program evaluation;
  • Excellence in organizational management developing high-performance teams, achieve strategic objectives, and managing a budget
  • Success working with a Board of Directors and ability to cultivate existing relationships
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Salary Range: $102k – $109k Depending on experience
