Under the direct supervision of the Youth Services Initiative Coordinators, provide assistance in planning, implementing, and coordinating programs and services that promote positive youth development in participants of a community-based, multi-faceted after-school program, including the development and/or coordination of recreation programs, academic enrichment programs, volunteer service projects, life skills workshops and family support services.


1.Assists the YSI Recreation Coordinator in the implementation and coordination of the following programs and services for participants of the Youth Services Initiative (YSI) after-school program:

  • Recreation and leisure programs and activities that will provide a foundation for personal, interpersonal, and life skills development.
  • Academic enrichment, literacy, and computer technology programs.
  • Individual and group tutoring programs.
  • Developmentally appropriate Life Skills workshops and activities.
  • Volunteer service projects.
  • Special events that bring families and communities together.
2.Assists in the supervision of program volunteers.
3.Maintain working relationships with parents of program participants.
4.Perform community outreach activities to develop and maintain strong ties to the community, and to inform families of YSI programs, services and activities.
5.Monitor attendance and follow up with participants in cases of persistent attrition.
6.Monitor academic and personal progress of program participants; mentor program participants in the process of setting goals and identifying ways to achieve them. Identify the need for additional services and make recommendations for staffing as needed.
7.May be required to work with teachers and school counselors as assigned by the YSI Recreation Coordinator.
8.Monitor the health and well-being of program participants and report any significant concerns to the YSI Recreation Coordinator.
9.Attend weekly team meetings and other meetings as required.
10.Assist with administrative tasks related to record keeping, report writing, and maintaining a participant data base.
11.Participate in professional development opportunities as approved and assigned.
12.Participate in the design and implementation of evaluation studies.
13.Perform related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the City.
14.Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.

Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or GED equivalent. Background in recreation and leisure services and at least one year of experience working in youth programs. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with people of different ages and from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Dependable and reliable, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as required. Experience and/or ability to be trained in driving a 15-passenger mini-bus and/or van. Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record. Acceptable background information, including criminal history. Current CPR/1st Aid certification.
Desired Qualifications:
Spanish/English bi-lingual. Bi-cultural in Latino culture. Familiarity with positive youth development principles and strengths-based approaches to prevention and intervention. Knowledge and experience in community development concepts and practices.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 3:00pm to 6:00pm.
